Probir Gupta

(b.1960, West Bengal) Gupta studied painting and mural design at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata and continued his training at Ecole Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux Arts, Paris. A prominent political and human rights activist, Gupta’s artwork critically examines issues of oppression, terror, religion, globalization and development. Through his imagery of industrial debris and war waste he presents an apocalyptic and chaotic glimpse of the 21st century.

His solo and group exhibitions include ‘Desert Scrap’ at Nature Morte, Berlin (2010); Alexia Goethe Gallery, London (2008); ‘To Whomsoever it May Concern’ at Bodhi Art Gallery, New York (2007); ‘Solo Exhibitions by 12 Indian Contemporary Painters’ in Paris (1998); ‘India Xianzai: Contemporary Indian Art’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (2009); ‘India 3: New Delhi- Republic of Illusions’ at Galerie Krinzinger, Wein (2009); ‘Zoo Art Fair 2008’ at the Royal Art Academy, London (2008); and ‘Indian Artists at the International Art Fair’ in Perth, Australia (2002).
