Shiv Verma
(b.1976, Chhattisgarh) Shiv Verma grew up in the village of Kondagaon
in the district of Bastar. He completed his BFA and MFA from MS University,
Vadodara. In 2008, he was the recipient of The Promising Artist Award
from IHC and had his work exhibited in New Delhi by Art India magazine.
Coming from a region of the country which is an important craft center
of India, Verma understands the techniques and nuances of traditional
and tribal art. His works, while retaining their own individuality,
manage to fuse together features of both traditional and contemporary
art practices.
Selected shows include ‘Aspects of Collecting’ at the Essl Museum
Klosterneuburg, Austria (2009); ‘Expressions at Tihar,’ Ojas Art,
New Delhi (2009); ‘Re-visioning Materiality’ at Gallery Espace, New
Delhi (2008); and ‘Saptarishis’ at Visual Art Gallery, New Delhi (2007).
His work can also be found in prominent Indian and international collections.
